Brief, Focused Individual Therapy

When you need to talk with someone, our counselors are here. They can help you work through your challenges through focused, one-on-one counseling sessions.  You can find support for a variety of concerns, including:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Depression
  • Academic problems
  • Relationship or family challenges
  • Trauma
  • Disordered eating, body image
  • Grief and loss
  • Alcohol and substance abuse

Remember that you are not alone and do not have to face these challenges alone.

What to Expect

During your initial consultation, you and a mental health counselor will discuss whether individual counseling is right for you. You will be assigned to a mental health professional for individual services if it is. (If there is a waiting list for counseling services, you may be added to the list and given information about how a counselor will contact you when an appointment becomes available.)

You and your counselor will work together to decide how long and how often to meet to best meet your needs. Brief therapy typically includes 1-6 sessions and may include receiving up to 12 sessions of individual counseling per academic year (Aug. 1 – July 31) if needed.

If you receive individual counseling services, you will typically meet every other week (other schedules are available based on your specific needs or your/your counselor’s availability). You and your counselor will work together to set goals for what you want to work on in counseling and evaluate your progress to ensure you get the help you need.

Information you share with your counselor is confidential.
